Detroit Red Wings Announce Two Forwards Out for the Season
The Detroit Red Wings have announced they will be without forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Frans Nielsen for the rest of the season due to injury.
Bertuzzi may require surgery due to his upper-body injury and his head coach Jeff Blashill said Thursday he hopes the forward can get the injury looked after and get back to 100% for next season:
It's been unfortunate for 'Bert. The focus right now for 'Bert' is getting himself healthy at the start of next season. I know he'll work hard with our medical staff to try to get himself into that position.
The 26-year-old is a pending restricted free-agent so this isn't the way he wanted to end a contract year. So far this season, the former 2nd-round pick has recorded seven points in nine games.
As for Nielsen, it's a lower-body injury that's going to keep him out the remainder of the season. The 36-year-old is in the back nine of his career and has struggled throughout this entire season, recording six points in 26 games. Considering the Wings are paying him $5.25 million per season including for next season, there's a chance he gets bought out this upcoming offseason.
Tough news for the Wings as they appear to be headed for another draft lottery. Let's hope this year they have better luck.
