Done Deal: Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets Complete a Trade
The Toronto Maple Leafs finally found a dance partner as general manager Kyle Dubas sent a 7th-round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward Riley Nash. The 31-year-old center gives the Leafs a defensive pivot for the playoffs, and someone who's chipped in with seven points in 31 games so far this season.
Nash is currently nursing a knee injury that is likely to keep him out of the rest of the regular season. The Leafs can move him to their Long Term Injury Reserve and reek the benefits of using the salary cap space on other players. Another creative trade by Dubas and the Leafs as they place $2.75 million on LTIR with the move.
Nash is a pending free-agent who's going to provide the Maple Leafs with some much needed depth for the postseason. There's a condition on the trade that stipulates if Nash plays 25% of the Leafs playoff games, the draft pick moves to a 6th-rounder.
Expect another deal from the Leafs and the Blue Jackets as both teams will be busy before Monday's deadline. For now the Leafs add a shut-down center for the playoffs and some salary cap space until then. Meanwhile the Blue Jackets start selling off assets.
