New York Islanders Mathew Barzal Fined for Diving

The NHL has announced New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal has been fined for diving/embellishment.

The news dropped on Wednesday as Barzal will pay $2000 as supplementary discipline under NHL Rule 64. As per the NHL, it's designed to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties.

Basically you start with a warning, then each citation you pay more money from $2000 for your second offense to your 8th offense that could see you lose $5000 and your head coach is also fined $5000.

As per the league:

Barzal was issued a Warning following an incident flagged by NHL Hockey Operations during NHL Game No. 126 against the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 30. His second Citation, which triggered the $2,000 fine, was issued for an incident at 4:47 of the second period during NHL Game No. 730 against the Washington Capitals on April 22.

The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
