Oilers' Nugent-Hopkins Rejects Latest Contract Offer From Edmonton

The Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contract saga continues as the team and the player can't seem to get into the small ball park of figures. The team recently tabled a five-year contract extension offer to RNH and it was quickly turned down and apparently wasn't even close to his asking price.

TSN's Frank Seravalli commented on the negotiations and admitted the team is trying hard to get the player signed but to this point, it doesn't look good:

No meaningful progress but that certainly [is] not for a lack of trying. At this point, these two sides are going to continue talking, that’s what they’ve agreed to. They’re going to continue the dialogue and see if they can work something out and I have zero sense at this point that the Oilers have any interest in moving Nugent-Hopkins before the trade deadline even without a deal done. They’d like to keep him and try and find a way to win as well as keep him locked up long term. We’ll see if they can do that.

So don't expect to see the Oilers move RNH before the deadline but they would like to get this deal completed before then so they know more about what their financials look like moving forward. General manager Ken Holland is reluctant to make a 'hockey deal' for more than just a rental as he's not sure what his salary cap space is going to look like without RNH signed.

Interesting times for Oilers fans as the team is trying to upgrade their roster for a playoff push, meanwhile there hands are being tied by one of their own.
