3 Potential Destinations for Frederik Andersen
Frederik Andersen is headed for unrestricted free agency and the Toronto Maple Leafs netminder could find himself on a new team next season. The Denmark native struggled at times this season and battled some injuries along the way. The goalie market will be hot this summer and Andersen is right there when it comes to the available talent.
3 Teams Who Will Be Interested in Signing Frederik Andersen
Toronto Maple Leafs: Make no mistake, if the price is right the Maple Leafs want Andersen back in a 1-B role behind Jack Campbell. The team won't have a ton of money to spend this summer but with Campbell only making $1.65 million next season, it gives the team some wiggle room for the other goalie position. While he didn't have his best season, the 31-year-old is still very capable and has shown the ability to steal games. His relationship with Auston Matthews could play a factor here as the two have become best friends. Perhaps Matthews is able to convince Andersen to take less money to stick around.
Washington Capitals: We all saw how pissed off Alex Ovechkin was with the goaltender in the playoffs this season and the team could be in the market to upgrade. Andersen could head to the Caps on a short-term 'show-me' deal which could turn into another contract extension. The time to win is now for the Capitals so they are going to need a #1 goaltender to get back into contention. Andersen would provide that for the team and they are familiar with his game considering the rivalry the two franchises have created these past few years.
Carolina Hurricanes: The Hurricanes have been interested in Andersen for a few years now and will be looking for a new goaltender to pair with rookie Alex Nedeljkovic with James Reimer and Petr Mrazek both free agents. The Hurricanes have almost $30 million in cap space and can make a contract fit in no problem. Andersen would be an upgrade for Carolina and provide them with one of the best duos in the league. Consider Carolina the wildcard here.
Freddy Andersen on the move? Potentially, but there's been some discussion for one more contract in Toronto. We'll see how it all plays out in a couple of weeks.
