3 Potential Trade Destinations for Maple Leafs Morgan Rielly
The Toronto Maple Leafs are faced with a tough decision this offseason as defenseman Morgan Rielly is eligible for a contract extension. The veteran d-man has one season left on his current deal, paying him $5 million and lately there's been a ton of trade chatter suggesting he could be moved for a power forward.
3 potential landing spots for Rielly if the Maple Leafs do trade him:
San Jose Sharks: The Rielly for Evander Kane swap surfaced last week and doesn't appear to be going away. The Maple Leafs and Sharks have held dialogue regarding a deal, but some think Tomas Hertl was discussed. We will have to see if something materializes between the two clubs, but there's no doubt the Sharks have some interest.
Dallas Stars: The Stars would love to add Rielly to their d-core as his skating ability would fit in well with the way Dallas plays. The Stars only have three defenseman signed under contract for next season so regardless if it's Rielly, they are going to need to add to their mix. A potential Rielly for Roope Hintz deal could make a lot of sense for both clubs. The Leafs would have to add a sweetener to the deal for Dallas to accept.
Calgary Flames: The Flames are a team to watch as we approach the expansion draft. It's likely they are going to leave a very good defenseman exposed which could mean a trade afterwards to replace them. Rielly is from Western Canada and playing closer to home wouldn't hurt his feelings. The Maple Leafs would love to get their hands on Elias Lindholm, who is under contract for three more seasons under $5 million and scored 47 points in 56 games last season.
The Maple Leafs could move on from Rielly to end up with a forward to round out their top six. A lot of his future rides in the hands of Nick Foligno who is either going to re-sign in Toronto or head back to Columbus. The expansion draft is also playing a major part here, so if a team ends up losing a solid defenseman, look for the Leafs to come calling with an offer. It's going to be an interesting offseason for Leafs Nation...get your popcorn ready!
