Maple Leafs and Frederik Andersen Discussing Extension

According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, the Toronto Maple Leafs have contacted Frederik Andersen to find out if he was interested in coming back to the team and the response was positive. It sounds like mutual interest exists and a deal could be in the works.

Andersen battled injury troubles last season and ended up losing his net to Jack Campbell. Campbell then went on a historic run and Andersen could never find his way back to the starter. It was mentioned he's ok to 'sharing' the crease as a 1-B type, as the former all-star has shown he does have it in him to go on stretches as an elite goaltender in the league. Last season the numbers weren't in Andersen's favor as he finished the season with a 2.96 GAA and a .895 save %.

The 31-year-old is coming off making $5 million a season, in perhaps one of the better goalie contracts in recent years. He was certainly outplaying his contract in years past, but unfortunately Andersen's 'contract year' didn't go as planned. Look for a potential two-year deal in the ball park of $6.5 million as he'll have to take a pay cut to remain with the Maple Leafs.
