Mark Messier is returning to the NHL and this time it will be directly in front of the camera with a hot microphone to gives us all his takes. The 'Moose' was hired by ESPN to be an NHL analyst, and it's reportedly a multi-year deal.
While there's currently a leadership award named after Messier, he certainly made his impact on the ice that has benefitted the NHL for decades. Now he takes his turn at coming to us live from our television sets and hopes he's able to articulate the game in a way that's entertaining and educating for the fans.
Messier's contract begins in 2021-22 and he joins the likes of Kevin Weeks, Ryan Callahan, Ray Ferraro, Brian Boucher and P.K. Subban who have all been hired recently by ESPN to cover the game. Messier became the network's biggest target after TNT outbid them for Wayne Gretzky.
