Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Swedish Hockey League Playoff MVP
The Toronto Maple Leafs took care of some internal business on Friday as they signed 2018 6th-round draft pick Pontus Holmberg to a two-year entry-level contract.
The 22-year-old is coming off a massive season which saw him take home some hardware. Holmberg was named forward of the year, won an SHL Championship and brought home the Playoff MVP trophy. He skated in 45 regular season games, recording 23 points and added 14 points in 17 playoff games.
So far in his 146 career games in Sweden, all with Vaxjo, Holmberg has recorded 19 goals and 31 assists. He's also represented Sweden on the international stage, including World Championships and World Juniors. Holmberg was the 156th overall pick at the 2018 draft and Maple Leafs fans will have to wait at least another year to get their first peek, as Holmberg is headed back to Sweden to play next season.
