Video: Maple Leafs Joe Thornton Keeping Playing Options Open
The Toronto Maple Leafs held their exit interviews with the media on Wednesday and veteran forward Joe Thornton commented on his playing future. The grizzled vet made mention he's undecided on returning next season, and has yet to make any final decisions.
You can't blame Thornton, who's going to take the summer and evaluate if he still belongs in the NHL. While it started off like a house on fire in Toronto, playing alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, Thornton faded throughout the season and was clearly a step behind come playoff time.
This came so sudden, I really haven't had time to think about it. First and foremost, I have to be a dad for a little bit here. But I feel really, really healthy. I feel really, really good.
The 41-year-old Dad signed a one-year contract with the Leafs and is now a free-agent. It's not expected general manager Kyle Dubas has any interest in bringing back Thornton, but that doesn't mean other teams won't come calling.
He scored 20 points in 44 games in the regular season and added one more tally in the playoffs. The future Hall of Famer is still chasing his first Stanley Cup, and could make his way to a contender next season. For now, back to the Dad jokes.
