3 Moves The New York Islanders Should Make This Summer
It's already been a busy off-season for the New York Islanders. They traded Nick Leddy to the Detroit Red Wings, lost Jordan Eberle in the Expansion Draft and managed to get Andrew Ladd's big contract off their hands. However, they still have plenty more to complete by the end of the summer. They are coming off of another impressive season and were just one win away from making the Stanley Cup Final.
Here are three more moves they need to make.
Re-Sign RFA Adam Pelech: Adam Pelech is one of the most underrated defenseman in the entire league. He has become a very effective defensive defenseman and is a huge reason behind the success of the Islanders. Re-signing him is a real necessity, as he's formed an amazing pair with Ryan Pulock. With him being a restricted free agent, the Islanders thankfully have control over the situation and should get it done.
Re-Sign RFA Anthony Beauvillier: Anthony Beauvillier took a big step forward this season with the Islanders and belongs in their top-six. In 47 games, the 24-year-old had 15 goals and 28 points. With the departure of Eberle, they certainly need to bring him back. He also should have even more opportunities on their power play this season, too. Expect to see him become an even better player next season.
Re-Sign RFA Ilya Sorokin: The Islanders have one last big RFA to extend, too. Ilya Sorokin is the future long-term goalie of this team. For now, though, he is forming a great tandem with Semyon Varlamov. In his rookie season, Sorokin had a 13-6-3 record to go along with a 2.17 goals against average and .918 save percentage. He also appeared in seven playoff games and went 4-1 with a .922 save percentage. It will be interesting to see how he does moving forward.
Honorable Mention: If possible, the Islanders should also re-sign pending UFA Casey Cizikas. He's a huge part of their fourth-line and one of their best penalty killers. The three RFAs are bigger priorities, but it would still be awesome to have the veteran return, too.
