3 Teams Who Should Sign 44-Year-Old Defenseman Zdeno Chara

At this present time, Zdeno Chara is considering his options going into next season. The 44-year-old defenseman has had a spectacular career and will certainly make it into the Hockey Hall of Fame. With the Capitals this season, he showed that he is still capable of being a bottom-pair defenseman in this league. In 55 games with the Capitals, the big man scored two goals and recorded 10 points. Those are pretty good statistics for an older defensive defenseman.

If Chara opts to play next season, he should get offers from other teams. He is still a force on the ice because of his physical play and works amazingly on the penalty kill.

These three teams could be great fits for him.

Washington Capitals: Although the Capitals lost in the first round this postseason, Chara was a very solid player for them. He meshed well with the guys in the locker room, which definitely should make the team at least consider bringing him back. He already knows their system and he was one of their most stable defenseman, too. With all of this said, re-signing him to a league minimum deal would be great.

New York Rangers: The New York Rangers were pushed around badly this season. There is no denying this fact. They need to add at least one tough, yet dependable player to their roster, and Chara certainly fits that description. He also would be a fantastic mentor to the young guys on the team, as they are still developing. When seeing as how New York is still close to his family, this seems like a potential fit for both parties.

Boston Bruins: It would be a perfect ending to his career. Chara spent 14 seasons with the team and was their captain for each of them. They need more depth on the left side for their defenseman, too. Even if he's used as a 7th defenseman, he would still be an immediate upgrade over what they have in that department.
