3 Teams Who Should Sign Underrated Goalie Jonathan Bernier

Jonathan Bernier may just be the most underrated goalie who can hit the open market. Since his rocky tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he has not gotten the attention he absolutely warrants. This season with the Red Wings was extremely impressive for the veteran, as he had a .914 save percentage on a weak Red Wings team. Had it not been for his solid play, they likely would have been with the Sabres at the bottom of the league standings.

He is a great option for those looking to form a 1A-1B goalie tandem, so there will be some takers for him this summer.

These three teams stand out the most when thinking of possible good fits for him.

Detroit Red Wings: Given his success with the Red Wings, they should try hard to re-sign him. He was not traded at the deadline as a rental, so perhaps they see him as somebody in their future plans. Although he is 32-years-old, it seems as though that he has a lot of hockey left in him. At a similar cap hit as his last contract, this signing would be marvelous for them.

Pittsburgh Penguins: Now, it is not time to give up on Tristan Jarry, as he still very young and has room left for growth. However, what this postseason did show is that the Penguins do need more insurance in net. Bringing in Bernier would give them a veteran goalie with an abundance of experience. It would also lower the pressure a bit on Jarry, as he would not be the only starting caliber goalie on the team.

Nashville Predators: With Pekka Rinne potentially done in Nashville, they will need to replace him. Signing Bernier would make a lot of sense, as he would make a solid tandem with Juuse Saros. Saaros has earned the starting job this season with his excellent play, but it wouldn't hurt to have a backup goalie who plays as well as Bernier. This is especially the case if injuries occur, too.
