Alex Ovechkin Re-Signs With The Washington Capitals!

The Washington Capitals are bringing back their captain and for a long time, too. Alexander Ovechkin has agreed to a five-year extension worth $9.5 million AAV. With so much term being on the deal, he has plenty of time to catch Wayne Gretzky's goal record.

More importantly, though, the Capitals have brought back their franchise player and captain. He has yet to show any real signs of regression, either. In 45 games this season, the 35-year-old winger scored 24 goals and recorded 42 points. At this point in time, he has 730 career goals and is just 164 goals away from Gretzky. He has to average roughly 33 goals per season to catch him. That is doable when looking at his past history.

The Capitals now have a little over $4 million of cap space left to work with. A clear necessity for them now is to sign another goalie, as they just lost Vitek Vanecek to the Kraken.

Nonetheless, this is a fantastic day for Capitals' fans!
