Cale Makar Signs Big Extension With The Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche have completed one of their biggest tasks of the off-season. They have signed Cale Makar to a six-year extension that carries a $9 million cap hit, according to Pierre LeBrun.

Makar has already become one of the best defensemen in the entire league and is only two seasons into his career. In 44 games this season, the 22-year-old scored eight goals and recorded 44 points. In 101 career games, he already has 94 career points. Yet, besides his offensive game being so dynamite, he also has been praised for his stellar defensive work. This is the type of top-pair defenseman that every team wishes they could have. It will be interesting to see just how much more he progresses, too.

Keep in mind, the Chicago Blackhawks just gave Seth Jones an 8-year extension worth $9.5 million per season. Makar played at a far better level than Jones did this season, as the latter struggled significantly compared to past years. This is something that Colorado fans should feel good about moving forward. It's simply a real win for the Avalanche.

Now, the Avalanche have to focus their efforts on bringing back Gabriel Landeskog and Philipp Grubauer before this upcoming Wednesday. They have a little over $20 million of cap space left to get it done.
