Kraken Send Veteran Defenceman To The Colorado Avalanche

The Kraken have made another deal to bolster their prospect closet going forward. Seattle's newest franchise has traded defenceman Kurtis MacDermid to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a 4th-round pick in 2023. MacDermid has one more year under contract at $875k.

MacDermid, an undrafted 27-year old defenceman, was picked up by the Kings in 2015, after which he played on their AHL affiliate the Ontario Reign. He put up promising numbers in the AHL, and earned himself a spot on the Kings roster. However, MacDermind has struggled to fill out his game in the NHL. While his scoring has been that of a defensive defenceman (6 goals, 17 points in 118 games), MacDermid has a career +/- of -25. Not exactly inspiring for a guy playing bottom pair minutes. The guy can grind though, racking up 151 PIM in those 118 games. That's averaging nearly a minor penalty every third game.

With that said, the Kraken being able to get a 4th rounder for the guy is an excellent return. MacDermid has never cost a team assets in his whole career, going undrafted and getting signed out of the OHL by the Los Angeles, then being taken by Seattle in this year's expansion. Considering the asset they're giving up, this is a pretty good deal for the Kraken. As for the Avalanche, maybe playing on last year's President's Trophy winner will help boost some of MacDermid's numbers. At 27 years old, the guy still has lots of tread left on the tires.

What do you think of this trade between the Kraken and Avs?
