Montreal Canadiens Bringing Back Key Forward
The Montreal Canadiens are holding on to a key piece to the Stanley Cup Finals run as the team announced they have signed forward Joel Armia to a four-year contract extension.
The deal is worth an average value of $3.4 million per season which is a great deal for both sides. Armia is 28 years old and played in 41 games last season for the Habs, recording 14 points, including seven goals. He turned it on in the playoffs with Corey Perry and Eric Staal and at 6'4 and 212 pounds, provides Montreal with some much needed size they didn't want to lose. Armia scored five times in 21 postseason games.
In seven seasons in the NHL, the Pori, FIN native has appeared in 336 regular season games with the Buffalo Sabres, Winnipeg Jets and Montreal, recording 125 points, including 62 goals. Armia also served 106 penalty minutes and scored 10 short-handed goals over the course of his NHL career. He tallied 10 goals and added five assists in 44 playoff outings with Winnipeg and Montreal.
Armia was selected in the first round (16th overall) by the Buffalo Sabres in 2011. He was acquired by the Canadiens in July 2018 along with goaltender Steve Mason in return for defenseman Simon Bourque and two draft picks. Armia played the 300th game of his NHL career on January 21 in Vancouver.
