Nate Schmidt To Be Dealt Shortly
According to Pierre LeBrun, the Vancouver Canucks are trying to trade Nate Schmidt before free agency starts on Wednesday.
Nate Schmidt's agent Matt Keator and Canucks GM Jim Benning have been working together on finding a new home for the veteran D. The hope is to get him moved before the UFA market opens Wednesday. Do Bos/NYI make sense? (Trotz connection). He has 10-team no-trade list (no).
Schmidt had requested a trade out of Vancouver earlier this summer, so this is not surprising. The Canucks also had a deal in place to send him to the Winnipeg Jets, but he rejected the deal. Keep in mind, he has a 10-team no-trade list, so he has some say over where he ends up next.
It was a down year for the 30-year-old defenseman this season, as he had five goals and 15 points in 54 games. During the three seasons before with the Golden Knights, Schmidt had at least 30 points. There is reason to believe he can bounce back and play top-four minutes elsewhere, though. He has four years left on his contract and it carries a $5.95 million cap hit.
We will what transpires soon, but it does appear that his days in Vancouver are over.
