New York Islanders Re-Sign Andy Greene

The New York Islanders have re-signed Andy Greene to a one-year, $750,000 contract. It also has $250,000 of bonuses. After trading Nick Leddy last night to the Red Wings, the Islanders needed one defenseman under contract for next year to be exposed at the Expansion Draft. They now have that with Greene.

It is unlikely that the 38-year-old defenseman will be picked, as the Islanders have better players also expected to be available. As a result of this, Greene should be right back on New York's bottom-pair next season.

In 55 games this season, he scored a goal and recorded five total points. At this stage in his career, he is more of a stay-at-home defenseman, but does the job very well. He is still immensely dependable and works very nicely on their penalty kill.

Overall, there is no reason to really complain about this extension. It is very cheap and the Islanders have much more money to work with because of the Leddy and Andrew Ladd trades. Therefore, they should still have far less trouble bringing back their restricted free agents.
