New York Islanders Trade Nick Leddy To The Detroit Red Wings

The New York Islanders have traded Nick Leddy to the Detroit Red Wings for Richard Panik and a 2021 2nd round pick. Half of Panik's cap hit will be retained by the Red Wings.

There were rumors surrounding Leddy because the Islanders did not want to lose him for nothing to the Kraken through the Expansion Draft. Through this trade, they get a few pieces back instead and gain some cap space. The latter is much-needed because they have some important restricted free agents to re-sign.

This is a wonderful move for the rebuilding Red Wings, as they are getting a veteran top-four defenseman. He will certainly be a good mentor for their younger guys, as he has an abundance of experience throughout his long career. The 30-year-old is also coming off of a great season that saw him score two goals and register 31 points in 56 games. He has one year left on his current deal.

As for Panik, he could be a decent depth winger for the Islanders moving forward. With half his salary retained by the Red Wings, he will have a $1.375 million cap hit in New York. In 48 games this season split between the Capitals and Red Wings, Panik had four goals and 12 points in total.

Overall, this looks like a real good trade for the Red Wings.
