Report: Carey Price Waives No-Movement Clause For Expansion Draft

Carey Price has reportedly waived his no-movement clause for the Expansion Draft. This will allow the Canadiens to protect Jake Allen, who had seemed like the Kraken's clear pick from them.

This is extremely surprising news, but it shows that Price is a team-first kind of guy. Also, after the marvelous postseason Price had, it is very strange to think that Montreal is willing to risk losing him for absolutely nothing. Alas, it is now a real possibility.

Although Price is a world-class goalie, the Kraken may elect to stay away from him because of how big his contract is. Price has five more seasons left on his deal and it carries a cap hit of $10.5 million. That is a lot of money and the Kraken may want to utilize their cap room elsewhere. Also, they are expected to sign Chris Driedger once he is officially selected and that may not come too cheap.

Price also already is 33-years-old, so he may show signs of regression as his contract continues to pass. However, when seeing as how he led the underdog Canadiens to the Stanley Cup Final, the Kraken could find it as a risk worth taking.

Nonetheless, it is shocking to see another popular name available for the Kraken to select. Vladimir Tarasenko and Max Domi were two notable surprises that were announced earlier, but Price is clearly the biggest one. If Price ends up being selected by Seattle, the beginning days of their franchise will be led by a future Hall of Famer. That is a pretty cool thought, but it is hard to determine if it will actually happen. We will find out next Wednesday, though.
