Reports are that he wants a shorter term (4-5 years) because he sees himself as a $10M-$11M player in the future. pic.twitter.com/dvE3M23SqE
In 55 games this season, the 24-year-old winger scored 27 goals and recorded 51 points. Producing this well made him win the Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie. Therefore, it is understandable that the Wild want to lock him up as long as possible.
Honestly, it is shocking that Kaprizov would reject a contract this large. In four to five years, he will be inching closer to 30-years-old. That makes the prospect of him being signed for $10 to $11 million not definite. Furthermore, his production could drop a little, as he has only one year of NHL experience. If that occurs, there is no way he will make that kind of money when he is older.
