The Detroit Red Wings Extend Veteran Defenseman
The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed defenseman Marc Staal to a one-year, $2 million contract. It also has a full no-movement clause.
Staal played his first season with the Red Wings this year after being traded from the New York Rangers. In 56 games, the 34-year-old defenseman had three goals and recorded 10 points. Even with him being older at this point, he is still a very dependable defensive defenseman at the NHL level. And as my good pal @reporterchris mentioned, also confirming the one year deal is worth $2 M plus includes a full NMC. https://t.co/T5CIOptmbo

Staal's leadership also has been praised by the Red Wings, so it makes sense that they have decided to bring him back another year. He should continue to be a great mentor for their younger players and especially for prospect Moritz Seider. Even though Detroit is rebuilding, it is important to have some older players around for this very reason.
If Staal remains healthy this season, he will hit the 1,000 game milestone, which is a notable accomplishment. Nonetheless, it is great to see the veteran coming back for another season. He earned this contract.
