The Detroit Red Wings Have Robbed The Carolina Hurricanes

According to Pierre LeBrun, the Detroit Red Wings have acquired goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic from the Carolina Hurricanes. What on Earth is happening?

Oh, the Hurricanes are also only getting a third-round pick and pending UFA Jonathan Bernier. At this time, there is no extension signed, either.

After a handful of years in the AHL, Nedeljkovic made it to the NHL this season and was nothing short of spectacular. In 23 starts, the 25-year-old goalie had a 15-5-3 record and a .932 save percentage. He also would take the starting job as the season progressed because of how well he played. He suited up in nine postseason games and had a 4-5 record with a .920 save percentage. Although the sample size has been small, it is shocking that they would give up on him after such a strong showing.

It has been announced by LeBrun that the trade occurred because the Hurricanes did not want to go to arbitration with him and they couldn't reach an agreement on an extension. Still, it is surprising they gave up so soon and suddenly.

The Red Wings now have their potential long-term goalie of the future. Many envisioned that he would hold this title with the Hurricanes, but that now that is not the case.

Perhaps the Hurricanes have a big splash on the way, but even if so, this is still rather questionable. Both Petr Mrazek and James Reimer are pending UFAs, too.

We will see what transpires, but it is rather risky to trade such a young goaltender who played that well this season. At the end of the day, this has all the makings of a complete steal for Detroit.

Update: The Red Wings have signed Nedeljkovic to a two-year extension.
