The New York Rangers Are Finally Getting Rid Of Tony DeAngelo

After a handful of hectic months, the Tony DeAngelo era in New York is finally coming to an end. The Rangers are officially buying out DeAngelo once the Stanley Cup Final is over, per Frank Seravalli. This was quite easy to predict, as the Rangers openly stated that DeAngelo would never play another game for them after playing only six games this season. They did try to terminate his contract, but DeAngelo refused to because of financial reasons.

Nonetheless, the upcoming buyout is great news for the Rangers, as it finally puts this prolonged drama to an end. It also will create even more cap space for them once the buyout is officially made. This makes the possibility of them being aggressive this off-season far greater. They could look to make a big signing or two via free agency or even comfortably trade for a guy like Jack Eichel. The possibilities are truly endless.

DeAngelo is a very talented offensive defenseman, so teams could express interest on a short-term deal. His 2019-20 season was particularly special, as he scored 15 goals and recorded 53 points in total in just 68 games. This kind of production is something that all NHL teams would love to have from a defenseman. However, his controversial past is something that franchises need to pay attention to as well. The Canadiens were interested in him a few months ago, so perhaps they may be willing to take on the risk.

No matter what happens with DeAngelo's future, the Rangers should be ecstatic to finally have him done with their franchise.
