Toronto Acquires Jared McCann From Penguins

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Filip Hallander and a 7th round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Jared McCann. Hallander was acquired from Pittsburgh by Toronto last summer in the Kasperi Kapanen deal. On the Pittsburgh side, McCann was going to be left unprotected in the expansion draft. This trade prevents the Penguins from losing him to Seattle for nothing.

Jared McCann is a 25-year old left-shot centreman. He was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks 24th overall in 2014. traded to Florida in 2016, and then eventually to the Penguins in 2019 along with Nick Bjugstad. McCann has had back-to-back 14 goal seasons in Pittsburgh, scoring 35 and 32 points respectively. He has 12 playoff games to his name, tallying 3 points in that span.

McCann is an offensively-inclined 3rd line centre who is sound defensively and works hard to keep himself out of the penalty box. He will be a solid middle 6 addition for the Maple Leafs. He makes $2.94 million this season, and will be an RFA come next summer. Meanwhile, while Hallander has not yet made his NHL debut, he was putting up good numbers with Lulea HF in Sweden this season. At only 21-years old, the Pens have lots of time to let this prospect ripen.
