Tyson Jost Returns To The Avalanche On A 2-Year Deal
Now that their bigger trades and signings have been dealt with, Colorado is locking up their younger RFAs. The Avalanche have extended Tyson Jost on a 2-year deal, worth $2 million AAV. There was some question as to how much Colorado would be willing to pay for Jost, given he has struggled to live up to his pedigree as a top 10 draft pick. However, Avs fans are enamored with the young forward and are excited to see his continued development.
Jost was drafted 10th overall by Colorado in 2016 and began his draft+1 year playing for the University of North Dakota. There he put up 16 goals and 35 points in 33 games, and was called up to the Avalanche lineup to close out the season, playing 6 games and scoring his first NHL goal. Since then, Jost has struggled to grow into the top 6 forward he was envisioned as at the draft. He is still certainly an NHL player, consistently putting up between 7 and 12 goals in his first four seasons, and adding 6 playoff goals in 40 games, but the explosive offence he showed with the Penticton Vees of the BCHL has yet to emerge in his pro career. The St. Albert native is still only 23-years old and has plenty of time to fill out his game.
Jost has developed a strong defensive presence in the meantime, finishing his last two seasons at +11 and +14. There's lots of room on a Cup contender like the Avalanche for a reliable two-way forward, and if Jost can build his identity around that he'll still earn himself a long NHL career. Jost will be 25 when his new contract expires and will be an RFA.
