2 Potential Landing Spots For Free Agent Sami Vatanen
Sami Vatanen is coming off of a down season, so it makes sense that he has yet to be signed. In 39 games between the New Jersey Devils and Dallas Stars, he only had two goals and six points. This was much lower than his usual production, as he is noted as an offensive defenseman. During the 2019-20 season with the Devils, he had 23 points in 47 games, so he certainly seems like a candidate for a bounce back season. These two teams should give him a chance to do just that.
Calgary Flames: The Calgary Flames would benefit a little more depth on the backend and Vatanen could be a nice addition. He would likely be able to play bottom-pair minutes with the team and there's no secret that they could use another right-handed defenseman. Also, with the loss of Marc Giordano, it would not hurt to add another puck-moving defenseman to the team. If Vatanen impressed at camp, he could even get some time on their power play.
Ottawa Senators: The Ottawa Senators are also another team who could help Vatanen find his game. He would maybe even receive a lot of playing time if he is able to bounce back. The Senators also have a weak right side at the moment and could use Vatanen to help strengthen it. Although the Senators have added both Michael Del Zotto and Nick Holden this off-season, they each play the left side. Adding one more veteran on the backend would be beneficial for their younger players, too.
