Arizona Coyotes: Best Addition And Worst Subtraction Of The Summer
Now that the off-season seems to be slowing down, we have a pretty good idea of every team's roster heading into this upcoming year. In this segment, we will be going over the best addition and worst subtraction for each of them. Something important to note is that players who were re-signed or given extensions will not be eligible for the "best addition" section. The same applies for 2021 draft picks.
In this article, let's look at the Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes have certainly been one of the most entertaining teams this off-season, as they embraced a monstrous rebuild. They have traded away multiple players and have brought in multiple bad contracts for high draft picks. It is a bold strategy, but it certainly could work out for them later down the road.
Best Addition: Shayne Gostisbehere D
When looking at all the bad contracts the Coyotes brought in this summer, there is one player who may work out well there. Shayne Gostisbehere desperately needed a change of scenery after being waived by the Philadelphia Flyers this past season. Now, he finally has one. He showed some signs of his old self this past season with the Flyers, regardless. In 41 games, he scored nine goals and recorded 20 points. It was far better than his 12-point campaign in 42 games the season before. Perhaps with the Coyotes he can get closer to his old form in terms of offensive production. He will likely never have another 65-point season again, but he could contribute well in a big role with the rebuilding Coyotes.
Worst Subtraction: Conor Garland RW
One could argue that losing Oliver Ekman-Larsson is the worst subtraction, but Conor Garland is also a serious loss. Garland is still just 25 years old and is coming off of a career-best season. In 49 games, he scored 12 goals and recorded 39 points. He also quickly signed a five-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks and will carry a cap hit of $4.95 million. He has the potential to become an even better scorer in this league, as he is entering just his fourth NHL season. Although the Coyotes were able to land themselves the ninth overall pick in the trade and select Dylan Guenther, Garland is still a very notable departure.
