Calgary Flames Re-Sign Juuso Välimäki
The Calgary Flames are continuing to stay busy today. After coming to terms with Nikita Zadorov earlier, they now have signed defenseman Juuso Välimäki to a two-year extension. It will have an average annual value of $1.55 million.
The Flames drafted Välimäki with the 16th overall pick of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. In 49 games with the Flames this past season, the 22-year-old scored two goals and recorded 11 points. Previously during the 2018-19 season with the team, he had a goal and three points in 24 games. He also started this past season with Ilves of Liiga. With them, he scored two goals and had 19 points in 19 games. This certainly grabbed the attention of the hockey world.
Välimäki is seen as having a plethora of potential and will continue to be given more chances moving forward. This could be the year that he blossoms into a true top-four defenseman, which would be huge for the Flames. Keep in mind, they just lost Mark Giordano to the Seattle Kraken.
