Columbus Blue Jackets Re-Sign Young Defenseman

The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed defenseman Andrew Peeke to a two-year, $1.575 million contract.

The Blue Jackets took Peeke with the 34th overall selection of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Over the last two seasons, he has suited up in 33 games. In them, he scored a goal and recorded six total points. The sample size has been quite small thus far, but when looking at Columbus' blueline heading into next season, he stands a shot of cracking their top-six.

The Blue Jackets notably traded Seth Jones earlier this off-season and David Savard signed with the Montreal Canadiens. Peeke also happens to be a right-handed defenseman, so he has two potential spots to obtain. When seeing as how Columbus appears to be heading for another rebuild, he stands a real shot of getting meaningful NHL time next season.

It will be interesting to see how Peeke performs with Columbus this season. He not only comes with size, but also has been noted for his smart senses and puck-moving ability. These characteristics could make him a nice addition to their lineup.
