Details Revealed on Claude Giroux's Future in Philly

The Philadelphia Flyers may have won the NHL offseason this summer after making a bunch of bold moves. The team is going to have a much different look come opening night for the 2021-22 season and while you can expect to see a big year out of captain Claude Giroux, one thing you won't be witnessing is a contract extension being signed.

Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher recently met with the media and had this to say about extension talks with this team's captain:

I've had good conversations with Claude and with Pat Brisson, his agent, and at this point our plan is to play the season out and we'll talk at the end of (it). I think we're both comfortable with that. Claude's our captain, he's a great player, and I anticipate that we'll find a way to continue that relationship going forward, but right now I think what we'll do is we'll just get through the season and we'll look at the situation and see where he's at, see where we're at, and we'll do what's best for everybody.

This will be the final season of Giroux's current deal that's paying him $8.275 million for the season. Last season he recorded 43 points in 54 games, so the extension will be tricky as he's not going to make the same money this time around. A lot can change with a monster season out of the 33-year-old, so it's likely a smart business decision for him to hold off on signing anything until next summer.
