Oilers Sign Rookie Goaltender To a 2-Year Deal
After a stellar season in the American Hockey League, the Edmonton Oilers have signed goaltender Stuart Skinner to a 2-year league minimum contract at $750k per season. The contract is a 2-way deal meaning Skinner will likely split his time between the Oilers and their farm team, the Bakersfield Condors.
Skinner is an Edmonton native who was drafted 78th overall by his hometown club in 2017. He played his first game in the NHL last season, making 33 saves and leading the Oilers to an 8-5 win over the Ottawa Senators. After filling in as backup while Mike Smith was injured to start the season, Skinner returned to the AHL where he had an elite showing, leading the entire league in wins by a goaltender and backstopping the Condors to a Pacific Division title. He put up a 2.38 GAA and a .914sv%, with a record of 20-9-1 in 31 starts.
The 22-year old will start the season in Bakersfield but can expect a call-up should one of Mike Smith or Mikko Koskinen miss time due to injury. Skinner will be 24 when his new contract expires and is hoping his next deal will see him playing in the NHL full-time.
What do you think of Skinner earning himself a new deal with the Oilers?
