Rumor: St. Louis Blues Want This Defenseman

According to Andy Strickland of The Athletic, the St. Louis Blues are interested in New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield. The Islanders have also been linked to Vladimir Tarasenko, so perhaps Mayfield would be a piece who heads back the other way in a potential deal. They also could still acquire Mayfield in a separate trade, of course.

Mayfield is a St. Louis native, so it would be pretty cool to see him play for his hometown team. He has emerged into a very solid defensive defenseman in this league. He is not only reliable on the backend, but plays a very heavy game. That is something that the Blues could truly benefit from.

In 56 games this past season, the 28-year-old defenseman scored two goals and recorded 15 points. He has played seven total seasons with the Islanders, so it is not set in stone that the Islanders would be willing to move him. However, if they do in fact want to acquire Tarasenko, they may have to.

Mayfield has two years left on his contract and it carries a $1.45 million cap hit. That is certainly affordable and honestly a steal for what he provides to the lineup.

We will have to wait and see where Mayfield ends up playing this upcoming season. He surely would help the Blues if they do end up getting him.
