Rumor: Zdeno Chara Close to Signing New Contract

The NHL free agency is winding down as training camp begins next month. Veteran defenseman Zdeno Chara hasn't signed yet, and the 44-year-old is expected to come back to play in the NHL next season. There's rumored interest between Chara and the Florida Panthers, and a deal could be finalized in the next two weeks.

The Panthers have been one of the teams who haven't made too many moves this summer, as their biggest addition may have been a couple of days ago when they signed veteran Joe Thornton. Adding Chara would give the team a couple of chaperons for the kids.

Chara spent last season with the Washington Capitals, playing in all but one game for the team, recording 10 points. The Panthers currently have just over $1 million in cap space. Any deal Chara signs, regardless with the Panthers or any other team would be for the league minimum.

Look for 'Big Z' to be signed by the start of training camp in the middle of September and it's sounding like he's heading to the Sunshine State.
