Two More 2021 Top Draft Picks Staying At The University Of Michigan
Matty Beniers and Kent Johnson have both confirmed that they will be staying at the University of Michigan this upcoming season. Beniers was selected second overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft by the Seattle Kraken, while Johnson was taken fifth by the Columbus Blue Jackets. This comes after first overall pick Owen Power making the same decision.
Beniers is coming off of a fantastic freshmen year with the school. In 24 games, the 18-year-old center scored 10 goals and recorded 24 points. It seemed possible that he could have made the Kraken's roster immediately, but him staying at school will not hurt. In fact, it may be the best decision for him, as he will continue to work on his craft. He also has already been praised heavily for his defensive game, so he should only get better from here.
Johnson also had a great start to his collegiate career this past season. In 26 games, the forward scored nine goals and had 27 points. He is noted for being quite the offensive talent, so another year at school should allow him to record even more points this go-around. The Blue Jackets certainly are looking forward to having him, as he could become a top-six center for them rather quickly.
Fourth overall pick Luke Hughes is also joining the school for his freshmen year, too. Therefore, four out of the top five picks in the draft will be playing for Michigan. That is quite impressive. This team could have a dominant season if all goes according to plan.
