Buffalo Sabres: 3 Candidates To Replace Jack Eichel As Captain

Jack Eichel has been in the rumor mill all summer, but a trade has yet to occur. It seems like a matter of time before the disgruntled center is finally dealt. When that finally happens, it will be interesting to see who the Sabres eventually pick as their next leader. In this piece, let's take a look at three candidates who are currently on the team now. They could always pick a player who they acquire in a hypothetical Eichel trade, but let's ignore that for now.

Rasmus Dahlin D: The Sabres took Rasmus Dahlin first overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. In 56 games this past season, he scored five goals and recorded 23 points. He also had a -36 rating, but he was playing on a weak Buffalo team. His first two seasons in the league were a lot better. The 2019-20 season is worth noting, as he had 40 points in just 56 games. He should be able to produce numbers like that again, as he is still just 21 years old. He is the best player besides Eichel on their roster right now, so he would be a clear candidate.

Dylan Cozens C: Dylan Cozens is another young kid who the Sabres could use as a future captain. The 20-year-old center had four goals and 13 points in 41 games this past season. He was not a superstar as a rookie, but he is a clear part of the team's long-term future and will get better with more experience. He was drafted seventh overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft for a reason. He also has experience being a leader, as he wore the C for Team Canada during the 2021 World Junior Championships. His hard work ethic also helps his case.

Casey Mittelstadt C/LW: Casey Mittelstadt is the oldest player on this list, but he's still just 22 years old. This season was a big step forward for him, as he cemented himself as a legitimate NHLer. In 41 games, he scored 10 goals and had 22 points. He is still young enough where he has plenty of room for further improvement. If he has a big year this season, he should get more consideration.

Honorable Mention: Owen Power has yet to sign his entry-level deal with the team, so let's hold off on any potential captain talk. The 2021 first overall pick could end up wearing the C later down the road if he reaches his full potential.
