Calgary Flames: Best Addition And Worst Subtraction Of The Summer
Now that the off-season seems to be slowing down, we have a pretty good idea of every team's roster heading into this upcoming year. In this segment, we will be going over the best addition and worst subtraction for each of them. Something important to note is that players who were re-signed or given extensions will not be eligible for the "best addition" section. The same applies for draft picks from this year's NHL Entry Draft.
In this episode, we will be looking at the Calgary Flames. It's been an intriguing off-season for the Flames. They have made a few additions, but also lost some players. They also did not shake up their core like many expected, so it will be intriguing to see how the team responds to all of this next season. Here's their best addition and worst subtraction.
Best Addition: Blake Coleman F
Blake Coleman was one of the biggest names on the free agent market this off-season and the Flames were the lucky team to grab him. Coleman was a huge part of Tampa Bay's two Stanley Cups, as he provided very solid scoring on their third-line. In 55 games this past season, he scored 14 goals and recorded 31 points. With Calgary, he stands a solid shot of being in their top-six, so his statistics could even go up. Regardless of what occurs on that front, he's a fantastic addition, as he's a winner and plays the game with great tenacity.
Worst Subtraction: Mark Giordano D
The Flames losing former captain Mark Giordano to the Seattle Kraken at the Expansion Draft is a very rough one. Even at 37 years old, he is still a very good defenseman. Although he will likely never hit 74 points like he did during his Norris Trophy winning season, he is easily a top-four defenseman at a minimum. Giordano also has spent the entirety of his 15-year NHL career with the Flames. With them, he had 143 goals, 366 assists and 509 points in 949 games. That is fantastic production from a defenseman, especially when you remember that he went undrafted. Nonetheless, he's a big loss, even with the addition of Nikita Zadorov.
