Carolina Hurricanes: Best Addition And Worst Subtraction Of The Summer
Now that the off-season seems to be slowing down, we have a pretty good idea of every team's roster heading into this upcoming year. In this segment, we will be going over the best addition and worst subtraction for each of them. Something important to note is that players who were re-signed or given extensions will not be eligible for the "best addition" section. The same applies for draft picks from this year's NHL Entry Draft.
In this piece, we will be focusing on the Carolina Hurricanes. They were perhaps the busiest team this summer and honestly, they had some very serious losses. They also signed a plethora of new players, so we will have to see how they all work out. Overall, they are one of the most fascinating teams heading into the season.
Best Addition: Frederik Andersen G (for now)
The Hurricanes made a ton of additions, but Frederik Andersen has the potential to be the best of them. Although he had a down season with the Toronto Maple Leafs this past season, he's been a proven starting goaltender for multiple years. If he is able to find his previous form, he could be a marvelous addition for Carolina. Tony DeAngelo could be a solid addition if he avoids starting conflict and simply plays his game.
If the Montreal Canadiens do not match the Jesperi Kotkaniemi offer sheet, he could become their best addition of the summer. He has a lot of potential and should be able to blossom into a top-six forward at the NHL level.
Worst Subtraction: Dougie Hamilton D
Dougie Hamilton became a legitimate top-pair defenseman with the Hurricanes during this time there. In 55 games this past season, he scored 10 goals and recorded 42 points. Yet, they were unable to sign him to a new contract and he will be taking his talents to the New Jersey Devils. It is very hard to find a right-handed defenseman who can produce as well as him, who also stays reliable. Thus, this makes him their worst subtraction.
However, Alex Nedeljkovic is also a very significant loss. The Hurricanes shockingly traded him to the Detroit Red Wings for just a 2021 third-round pick and the rights of Jonathan Bernier. Nedeljkovic just finished his first full season with the team and became their starter. In 23 games, he had a 15-5-3 record to go along with a .932 SV%. He was a restricted free agent, so they had control over his rights. Overall, it's just a very peculiar decision that could haunt them for years to come.
