Columbus Blue Jackets: 3 Candidates To Be Named Next Captain
At this said time, there are six teams who do not have a captain. Thus, in this short segment, we will be discussing three players from each team who could end up being given this honor. It is important to note that there is a chance that some of these teams may hold off from naming one. Yet, it is still entertaining to go over their options.
The Columbus Blue Jackets will be discussed in this one. What is there to say about them? They have traded so many of their potential candidates over the last year, but thankfully, they still have a few more. Whoever ends up being chosen, it will be a hard task to replace longtime captain, Nick Foligno.
Zach Werenski D: Zach Werenski signed a six-year, $57.5 million contract earlier this off-season. With the contract being for that many years, it is apparent that he stands a very good shot of being their next captain. He is their best defenseman and is the type of player to build around. In 335 career games thus far, he has 65 goals, 124 assists and 189 points with the team.
Boone Jenner C: Boone Jenner had the chance to leave the Blue Jackets this summer through free agency, but he opted to stay for four years. That loyalty should be praised. He has spent his eight years with the team and is one of their best leaders. At this said time, he has played all 530 of his NHL games with them. He also is an extremely hard worker, so that should only increase his chances.
Jakub Voráček RW: The Blue Jackets brought back Jakub Voráček this off-season and he could be an interesting choice. He has 968 career games under his belt and is still a very productive top-six winger. It is never a bad thing for a team to go with a grizzled veteran as their leader and Voráček has been an alternate captain in the past. Thus, it feels fair to mention him as a possible choice.
