Los Angeles Kings Sign Cal Petersen To Extension

The Los Angeles Kings have signed goaltender Cal Petersen to an extension, according to Dennis Bernstein and David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. It is a three-year contract and comes with a $5 million cap hit.

Petersen has one year left on his current contract and it carries an $858,333 cap hit. He was due to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but now that has changed.

In 35 games this past season, Peterson sported a 9-18-5 record and had a .911 SV%. Although he had a losing record, his save percentage shows that he still played well. Over his first two seasons, he had a .922 SV% and .924 SV%, but that was in 20 total games.

Petersen appears to be the long-term starting goaltender for the Kings moving forward. Kings legend Jonathan Quick has struggled over these last three seasons, but still is an acceptable backup. In 22 games this season, he had an 11-9-2 record and .898 SV%.

Once the details of Petersen's contract is released, we will update this piece. Nonetheless, it's good news that the Kings were able to extend him now, as they may have lost him to the open market next summer.
