Marc-Andre Fleury May Retire After 2021-22 Season
According to Rory Boylen, during an interview on 31 Thoughts: The Podcast, Marc-Andre Fleury said this upcoming season could be his last one when asked about his future. His entire interview with Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek will be released to the public soon.
This may not be the most surprising news, as Fleury already contemplated retirement after being traded from the Vegas Golden Knights to the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this summer. Fleury spent the last four seasons with Vegas and immediately became a fan favorite when they selected him in the 2017 Expansion Draft.
Fleury is also coming off of a fantastic season, so he clearly can still thrive in this league. In 36 games on the year, he had a 26-10-0 record to go along with a 1.98 GAA and .928 SV%. This would be enough for him to win both the Vezina Trophy and William M. Jennings Trophy.
Fleury has one year left on his contract and it carries a $7 million contract. Even if this ends up being his last year, Chicago should be thrilled to have him for the short-term. They gave up nothing to acquire him and he makes them look a more competitive team heading into the season. Perhaps they could even claw their way back into the postseason.
Nonetheless, whatever Fleury decides to do, he will forever have the respect of hockey fans.
