New Jersey Devils: 3 Players With Expiring Contracts
With the off-season almost completed, it feels right to take a preview into next year's. In this segment, we will be looking at three players from each team who have expiring contracts. Both restricted and unrestricted free agents are eligible for discussion.
In this piece, we will be looking at the New Jersey Devils. They are going to be in for a very busy summer, as a lot of their most notable players have expiring deals. Thankfully, though, they still have a lot of money to work with. Thus, it should not be too difficult for them to get everything done.
Jack Hughes C (RFA): Jack Hughes is heading into the final year of his entry-level contract and will be expecting a nice raise. Hughes had a very solid second season in the league, as he scored 11 goals and had 31 points in 56 games. The 2019 first overall pick should only get better from here and is already one of the main pieces of their core. If he ends up having himself a true breakout season and inches closer to his elite potential, he will certainly be getting a long-term deal.
P.K. Subban D (UFA): P.K. Subban $9 million cap hit will be off the books after this season. Teams have reportedly called the Devils about his availability, but for now, it's safe to assume he is staying there for the upcoming season. Although Subban is no longer a top-pairing defenseman, he still can contribute offensively and works on the bottom-pair. In 44 games this past season, he scored five goals and recorded 19 points. If he's capable of producing similar totals this season, the Devils could consider re-signing him to a much cheaper deal.
Pavel Zacha C/LW (RFA): Pavel Zacha is starting to live up to his first-round pick status. In 50 games this past season, he scored 17 goals and recorded 35 points. These were each career-highs, while also being done in far less games. If Zacha ends up having another season like this, he will be in for a good payday. It will be interesting to see what the 24-year-old forward gets next off-season, but the Devils should be happy that he's still a restricted free agent for it.
Honorable Mention: Miles Wood will also be a restricted free agent. In 55 games this past season, he scored a notable 17 goals and had 25 total points.
