New York Islanders Sign Jon Gillies To PTO

The New York Islanders have signed goaltender Jon Gillies to a professional tryout contract.

With the Islanders having a tandem of Semyon Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin, it's apparent that Gillies wouldn't be in the running for the NHL squad on a permanent basis. However, if he impresses on his tryout, he could be signed and be a nice addition for Bridgeport. He also would provide them with another depth option to go along with their third goaltender, Cory Schneider.

In 12 career NHL games with the Calgary Flames, Gillies has a 4-5-1 record and .903 SV%. He's last played at the NHL level during the 2017-18 season.

Gillies has had success at the AHL level, though. During the 2017-18 season, he sported a .917 SV% in 39 games. However, in recent seasons, his statistics have dropped a bit, as he had a .907 SV% during the 2019-20 season. In five games with the Utica Comets this past season, he had a 3-1-1 record and .902 SV%.

It never hurts to add another goaltender and Gillies would provide a little more insurance if injuries occur with their top ones. We will have to wait and see if the 27-year-old earns himself a job.
