New York Rangers: Best Addition And Worst Subtraction Of The Summer

Now that the off-season seems to be slowing down, we have a pretty good idea of every team's roster heading into this upcoming year. In this segment, we will be going over the best addition and worst subtraction for each of them. Something important to note is that players who were re-signed or given extensions will not be eligible for the "best addition" section. The same applies for picks from this year's NHL Entry Draft.

In this piece, let's take a look at the New York Rangers. The Rangers clearly had one primary goal in mind this off-season and that was to get tougher. They surely did that with their acquisitions and should be a pain to play against because of it. It will be interesting to see if they are able to get themselves back into the postseason this year.

Best Addition: Barclay Goodrow F

The New York Rangers are getting a very useful player in Barclay Goodrow. The tenacious forward has just won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning and was quite solid on their third-line. In 55 games this past season, the 28-year-old scored six goals and recorded 20 points. Although the contract he signed comes with risk, he will be a nice addition for them because he can be play any position upfront and is an efficient penalty killer.

Honorable mentions also should go out to Patrik Nemeth and Ryan Reaves. Nemeth is a reliable bottom-pair defenseman who comes with size. Reaves also gives the Rangers a very tough player who will protect their stars.

Worst Subtraction: Pavel Buchnevich RW

Pavel Buchnevich was traded to the St. Louis Blues this off-season after a very strong year. In 54 games with the Rangers, he scored 20 goals and recorded 48 points. The return they received back for him was a bit underwhelming, so that makes the loss of him sting a bit more. The one positive about the move is that the Rangers' young wingers will be given bigger roles from it. Still, Buchnevich is a very notable loss and will be a great piece for the Blues moving forward.
