New York Rangers Having Extension Talks With Star Center
According to Larry Brooks, the New York Rangers are having extension talks with Mika Zibanejad. He is in the final year of his contract and there is mutual interest between both parties.
Zibanejad will be getting a significant raise from his current $5.35 million cap hit. With the Rangers, he has developed into a legitimate first-line center. In 56 games this past season, he scored 24 goals and recorded 50 points. However, it is important to note that he started the year off slowly because he did not feel 100% after having COVID-19. He would finish the year with 21 goals in the team's last 29 games.
During the 2019-20 season, he was a complete star, as he scored 41 goals and had 75 points in just 57 games. It is not hard to believe that he will continue to produce at a similar level moving forward, as he is a top goal-scorer when on his game.
The Rangers also have to give Adam Fox a new deal this off-season, so they have to be careful with their money. Furthermore, they have many other key players on entry-level contracts who will need raises over the next couple seasons, too.
Yet, Zibanejad is a huge part of this team, so an extension is needed.
