Philadelphia Flyers: Best Addition And Worst Subtraction Of The Summer

Now that the off-season seems to be slowing down, we have a pretty good idea of every team's roster heading into this upcoming year. In this segment, we will be going over the best addition and worst subtraction for each of them. Something important to note is that players who were re-signed or given extensions will not be eligible for the "best addition" section. The same applies for picks from this year's NHL Entry Draft.

In this piece, we will be looking at the Philadelphia Flyers. After a disappointing year, they made a plethora of big changes. They were one of the most active teams this summer, so naturally, all hockey fans will be paying close attention to them moving forward. Will they be better, though?

Best Addition: Ryan Ellis D

For the best addition section, the Flyers have multiple different candidates. Personally, I see Ryan Ellis as the best of the bunch, though. In 35 games last season with the Nashville Predators, he scored five goals and recorded 18 points in 35 points. During the season before, he had 38 points in 49 games, so Flyer fans could see that from him moving forward. Ellis is also under contract for six more seasons, so they have a legitimate top-four defenseman locked up for awhile.

Honorable mentions also need to go out to Rasmus Ristolainen and Cam Atkinson. Ristolainen only has year left, so going with Ellis seemed like the right choice. Atkinson is a dark horse, though, as he is a top-six winger who 41 goals during the 2018-19 season.

Worst Subtraction: Jakub Voráček RW

Although the Flyers received Atkinson for him, losing Jakub Voráček is a notable loss. His contract is expensive, yes, but he's still a very solid top-six winger in this league. In 53 games last season, he scored nine goals and recorded 43 points, which is very solid. He also was a key contributor for the Flyers for a decade, so he warrants a lot of respect. In 727 games as a Flyer, he had 177 goals, 427 assists and 604 points.

Former second overall pick Nolan Patrick also is a notable loss. Although he struggled this season, he will be looking to get his career back on track with Vegas.
