Pittsburgh Penguins: 2 Underrated Players To Watch

The NHL has so many underrated players who deserve far more recognition. In this segment, we will be discussing two from every team in the league. Their overall roles and abilities may differ, but they all share the common theme that they are not as respected as they ought to be.

For full transparency, two teams will be randomly picked from a wheel each day. The winners will then be discussed.

Today's first piece will be on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins have a strong core that consists of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Jake Guentzel. However, they do have some other depth players who also benefit them. These two particularly come to mind.

Casey DeSmith G: Casey DeSmith is a solid goaltender and the truth is in his stats. In 20 games this past season, the 30-year-old out up an 11-7-0 record and .912 SV%. This came after a season where he stuck in the minors with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, so it's great that he showed he can still compete at the NHL level. However, even during the 2018-19 season with Pittsburgh, he had a .916 SV% in 36 games. Overall, he has plays the backup role well in Pittsburgh and it's time more people to recognize that.

Teddy Blueger C: Teddy Blueger had himself a career year this past season. However, opposing fans around the league may not even realized that. In 43 games, he scored seven goals and recorded 22 points as a bottom-six forward. If he can continue to produce that well in his role, he will be such a useful player for them. He also is a big part of their penalty kill, so he provides in multiple different ways.
