Pittsburgh Penguins: Best Addition And Worst Subtraction Of The Summer
Now that the off-season seems to be slowing down, we have a pretty good idea of every team's roster heading into this upcoming year. In this segment, we will be going over the best addition and worst subtraction for each of them. Something important to note is that players who were re-signed or given extensions will not be eligible for the "best addition" section. The same applies for picks from this year's NHL Entry Draft.
In this piece, we will be focusing on the Pittsburgh Penguins. Due to limited cap space, they were not able to make many additions this off-season. Furthermore, they did lose a handful of players who will be missed. It will be interesting to see how they perform this upcoming season, as their core is getting older and hungry for a fourth Stanley Cup.
Best Addition: Brock McGinn LW
Brock McGinn should be an interesting addition for the Penguins. He will help add a bit more depth to the bottom-six. In 37 games this past season with the Carolina Hurricanes, he scored eight goals and recorded 13 points. In a full 82-game schedule, he should be able to contribute 25 to 30 points per season if he remains consistent. His best year came during the 2017-18 season with Carolina, as he scored 16 goals and recorded 30 total points. If he can replicate those totals, he should be liked quickly.
Worst Subtraction: Brandon Tanev LW
Losing Brandon Tanev for nothing at the Expansion Draft is extremely rough for Pittsburgh. He's a heart-and-soul player that is able to add a little bit of everything to the lineup. He was one of their key penalty killers, so his loss will be noticeable. In 32 games this past season, he scored seven goals and recorded 16 points. The Penguins are hoping McGinn can replace Tanev well, but that is certainly a hard task. An honorable mention also should go out to Cody Ceci, as he played very well with the team this past season.
