Rumor: Edmonton Oilers May Add Another Goaltender

According to Elliotte Friedman's most recent 32 Thoughts piece, the Edmonton Oilers may not be done making changes to their roster. More specifically, he envisions them bringing in another goaltender in the near future. At this point in time, they will be running a Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen tandem - just like last season.

This has been an ongoing rumor that has yet to go away. Truthfully, it makes sense. Smith is the expected starter, but given the fact that he is 39 years old, it would not hurt to provide him with more support. Koskinen also had his struggles this past season and was viewed as a buyout candidate this off-season. Koskinen had a 13-13-0 record this season and .899 SV%.

In 32 games this past season, Smith was fantastic. He sported a 21-6-2 record and .923 SV%. Thus, he can be utilized as a starter, but one has to wonder if he will be able to replicate those numbers this season. Over the two previous seasons, he had a .902 SV% and .898 SV%. Therefore, it is natural to have some concern, especially with the Oilers looking to have a deep run this postseason.

The Oilers also are projected to be over the salary cap, so adding another goaltender would be difficult. Moving another player or two in a trade would be a necessity.

We will have to wait and see if Edmonton figures out a way to help their goaltending situation.
